10 Sci-Fi Book To Movie Adaptions You shouldn't Miss (2013-2014)

10: Mortal Instruments: City of Bones

I know virtually nothing about this movie even though I know it's really popular. I friend of mine read it and is super exited and the plot line seems cool enough. Even though this movie is on my list of ten movies that you shouldn't miss, naturally, I will probably miss it. Sorry, Sony, but fantasy has lost its wow for me.
The plot is that a normal girl (unfortunately, the same bad actress who played Taylor Lautner's girlfriend in Abduction) has to become a heroin and (not so hard) a boyfriend to a british monster hunter. It looks fast paced and cool but like I said, not interested.
The movie comes out in August 2013 and is already beginning its long and complicated marketing campaign to get people to freak out about this movie.
The main characters are played by Jamie Campbell Bower and Lily Collins and the film is directed by Harald Zwart.

9: Divergent

I started to read this after a friend (incidentally, the same friend who read Mortal Instruments) told me about it. It had the feeling of a sci fi book but, as I love to stick with books until the end, when nothing interesting happened in the first 10 minutes, I quit reading it. This movie comes out on March 21st, 2014. The film is directed by Neil Burger and so far, has the look of a good dystopic sci fi flick.
The general idea for this movie (naturally because of the post title, it's based on a book) was that this girl lives in a futuristic (post apocalyptic, of course) world where a girl (I forget her name) lives in a sector of some city where nobody thinks highly of themselves.
There are like tons of sectors that have different traits (some are smart, some are daring, some are modest) and at the age of 16 (?), they get sorted into sectors. However, when she takes her test to determine where she should be, she comes out as Divergent which means she doesn't belong in any sector.

8: The Lone Ranger

I know this already came out but I just thought I'd add this to the list. Even though it's on course to be up there with World War Z as far as difference from the book, it has some following. The movie itself is a pretty good collection of actors and actresses. At the front of the procession of course, is Johnny Depp. Also the oddly stage named Armie Hammer as the Lone Ranger himself.
We've also got some Harry Potter mixed in there with Helena Bonham Carter who plays the evil Bellatrix in HP  (in case anybody was wondering). Also on the list is William Fichtner who plays the main villain in the movie.
One of the things that makes this movie so cool looking is that it's based on so many things including a book and a tv show.
Fans are worried that the film is too unlike the book just by seeing that Johnny Depp is listed as the first character.

7: Legend

I am super physiqued about this film whose release date has not actually been set so we don't know whether Marie Lu's New York Times acclaimed novel is actually coming to screen in the 2013-2014 era. So, I guess I lied a little. Kill me!!
According to author Marie Lu, this movie's rights are held by CBS Films who currently have a single drafted script out and are ready to begin casting. The film is being produced by Wyck Godfrey and Lu says that she has her fingers crossed at the San Diego Comic Con 2012.
So, if this movie does come around, who do you think should play the starring messed up couple Day and June? I'm thinking Ender's Game's Butterfield or The Hunger Games's Hemsworth as Day and Lily Collins or Emma Watson as June. But, you wouldn't want to pair up Asa Butterfield and Emma Watson. Ugh!!! Too much of an age difference. Comment or G+ Share your thoughts to me.

6: The Giver

Okay, fine, I lied again! Big deal. This movie officially has no release date even though the to leading men/boys have been cast. Jeff Bridges will be The Receiver and Brenton Thwaites will play Jonas. I congratulate The Weinstein Company for picking such a good Jonas character. He really looks the part (in my mind)!
The movie is coming hopefully sometime in the next few years (fingers crossed) and is (I actually know this part) being made by The Weinstein Company and Walden Media. It was originally owned by Warner Bros. but it changed hands somehow.
The story is of a dystopian environment posing as a utopia. Nobody can see color, hear music, or even pick their own jobs and spouses. Your children are given to you at the age of one.
12 year old Jonas (Thwaites) is picked to be the next Receiver of Memory who has to get all of the memories of the past. He and the current receiver rebel together to make a new and better  world.

5: The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug

Finally, a movie that definitely comes out in the allotted time of 2013 - 2014. The second film in the Hobbit trilogy is the ending of the book but they are making a third movie of stuff that is not actually in the book at all. The return from the Misty Mountains.
The Desolation of Smaug starts with the dwarfs and Bilbo going into the dark forest of Mirkwood where they encounter spiders and elves and (if the second movie follows the first's nothing like the bookishness) tons of unrelated stuff about Orcs and eccentric wizards.
The movie is set to come out sometime in December and it's readily anticipated.
The trailer has already been released a bit prematurely but it's still very popular with fans and non fans alike. It sounds like they are making the elves a much more important part of the movie than in the book.

4: Thor: The Dark World

So technically, this isn't a book to movie adaption at all but an adaption on a comic book series. But it still contains many of the things that the book 2 film adaption does. For instance, Thor has rabid fans, a big budget, good looking actors from both genders and lots of fancy effects.
The essential story is that Thor (Chris Hemsworth) has to go back down to earth to save his girlfriend from a dark force that is covering the planet by bringing her back up to Asgard.
For those of you who don't know Thor at all, he is a god from Norse mythology. He controls thunder and lightening and has a hammer that only he can pick up.
In the first Thor movie, he met his girlfriend and stopped his evil brother Loki from destroying the ice giants. Loki likes to destroy stuff. It must run in the family because Thor runs around hitting stuff with a giant hammer.

3: Robopocalypse

I know very little about this movie. Well, thats not (strictly speaking) true. I know the general plot line and stuff.
The story is that in a future where robots do everything for us, there is one robot who changes everything. She (I think that's what it goes by) essentially hot wires all of the robots to kill their human controllers.
The movie looks promising (Steven Spielberg) and it stars Chris Hemsworth as Cormac Wallace.
However, this movie may not actually come out (oh, no) Spielberg has postponed Robopocalypse indefinitely. I've only added it onto this list because I'm in the mood for a good apocalypse flick, especially one made by Steven Spielberg and, needless to say, I hope Spielberg gets back on his game and makes this movie.

2: The Hunger Games: Catching Fire

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (most commonly referred to as just Catching Fire) comes out November 22nd, 2013. It's really a tossup whether I am more exited to see this or Ender's Game.
The second trailer for this sci fi/fantasy flick recently came out and I truly don't know if I can wait or not until November.
The story behind Catching Fire is that, in the dystopic future where the ruthless capitol (lead by President Snow) forces twenty four tributes from the twelve districts to fight to the death in the arena. The last tribute standing is the victor and is showered in riches.
When Catching Fire starts, the main character Katniss Everdeen has won the games with her kind of boyfriend Peeta Mellark. But they have stirred up a rebellion and the president decides to kill them by putting them back into the horrible games again to rematch, this time, against the previous victorious tributes.

1: Ender's Game

Ender's Game. My dad's been trying to get me to read it for like 6 years and when I finally obliged, I loved it. I continued to read books 2, 3, 4, and 5. I even continued on to read The Shadow Series. And now, I am super psyched about the movie. Even before reading the book, I looked on IMDB and, upon finding  that it was going to be a movie, emailed my father about it. Then, I read the book!
The movie/book's plot is that, in a future where buglike aliens called (wait for it, it's a very creative name) Buggers have attacked earth twice and, in preemptive preparation for the third invasion, have turned to children who have to become military commanders at a very young age.
Ender is a particularly gifted "Battle Schooler" who excels at the war games that the IF (the world military) gives him.
The movie is set to come out on November 1st which is a date I am hurriedly counting down to. Ender's Game stars Asa Butterfield, Harrison Ford, Hailee Seinfeld, Aramis Knight, Viola Davis, and a bunch of others too!!
