Review

I really enjoyed Oblivion even though it was just weird. It was nice and sci-fi ish with a lot of cool effects, dystopian futures, interesting twists, awesome technology and many pictures of epic and utterly destroyed landmarks. The aliens seemed really fake but that was just because they were actually humans just pretending!

The storyline was good even though there were plenty of gaping holes. For instance, cryogenically freezing people who are going for a 12 hour trip into earth's atmosphere is a complete waste of cryo stuff! For another, Jack couldn't really outrun or outshoot drones.

Also, if robots can shoot the shit out of somebody, they really should be able to have robots that can fix other robots. Oh,and another big thing: Even though I didn't put this in the synopsis, Jack and Victoria were cloned and that was why there were multiple versions of them. They were sucked into the Tet when they arrived at it. So, in order to protect the other people on the mission who were cryo frozen, Jack disconnected the huge part of the ship so it could escape the irresistible pull of the Tet. However, it makes no sense that the little front of the ship wouldn't be able to escape the field but the huge part could.

But, despite the very obvious flaws in the actual reach of the technology in the movie, the flick was great!! I think that if you like incredible tech, wicked cool architecture, mysterious twists and epic sci fi, you'll most likely enjoy Oblivion!

Summary

The first thing I think of when I think of Oblivion is the catch phrase used all the time in the movie "Are you still an effective team?" PS: If any creepy sociopath posing as your boss ask you that about your boyfriend and you, say yes or else they will order a drone to blow you up.

Oblivion is a truly weird movie! It stars action star Tom Cruise and hugely popular Morgan Freeman, but, other than that, none of the actors are even remotely famous! In fact, I thought the woman who plays the bitchy Victoria was animated. She had almost no features on her face!
Oblivion starts out with Tom Cruise who plays Tech 49, Jack Harper (what is it with him and playing men named Jack?). He is partnered with his robotic and featureless romantic partner Victoria. The lie they have been fed (SPOILER) by their bosses is that aliens attacked earth and blew up the moon. Personally, I don't see how that would be bad for  anybody except Skip Frye and other surfers but I guess people started to panic. The aliens (dubbed "scavs"by the humans) attacked earth after accidentally blowing up the wrong planet (or moon, whatever) and humans naturally blew up most of their planet with nukes to stop them. The humans won the alien war (okay, at least this movie deviates from the  classic Battleship aliens killing everyone scenario) but had to leave (okay, I take back what I just said about deviating). Humans built this incredibly in-practically shaped  spaceship for mission control called The Tet. All humans not in the military moved to one of saturn's moons (so, aliens attack earth and destroy it, so the humans go and attack another planet. How nice!) and a couple of "Techs" stay on earth to maintain the drones that work to kill the remnants of the scavs that are still on earth. Of course, this is all a lie. Cliche!
Tom Cruise and Victoria live together in a super cool house on earth. They have sex almost every night (what's in it for Jack? She's really ugly) and Jack goes out to fix broken drones that were shot down by scavs. Victoria is mission control. She talks to the annoying boss who's named is "Sally" and ends up being a sociopath (SPOILER again)
Jack wants to stay on earth but Victoria wants to get to the Tet as quickly as possible! Jack goes to fix drones everyday. He notices that the scavs he shoots at as he fixes drones aren't trying to kill him but capture him. How very mysterious!!!????!!!!
Jack has a secret place in a valley where he likes to go. It's a kind of old house he remembers from before the memory wipe that the government gave him. He likes just going there alone. He must like getting away from his incredibly ugly girlfriend Victoria.
Naturally, one of the times when he goes there, his nice alone time is cut very short by the crash to earth of a human NASA  spaceship filled with cryogenically frozen humans. Jack hops in his super cool spaceship and zooms away to the crash site.
The drones don't like the cryogenically frozen humans and they come and start blowing up all of them. One of the people is somebody Jack remembers from the dreams he has of before he got his memory wiped. He stands in front of her and stops the drones from firing at her. The drone, recognizing him as a member of Tech 49, leaves him alone and he gets her back onto his ship. They both fly away into the sunset.
Victoria and Jack explain what happened to the woman and ask her about her ship. She says that she has to get the mission log from her ship if they want to know anything. She is like my sister: very stubborn and acts younger than her age!
So Jack and the woman go to the crash site and get the mission log (Mission Accomplished) before getting attacked by the scavs, brought to their secret hideout, learned that the Tets are humans in disguised, and let go by the leader (Morgan Freeman) when Victoria send drones to destroy the main base (Mission not so Accomplished).
Now stuck in the middle of nowhere, the woman gives him some odd news. He and Victoria were part of a mission to gather intel about an alien spaceship. The alien spaceship was the Tet. And the woman (her name is Julia) is Jack's wife.
Now convinced that his boss Sally (even though she looks like another bitchy human) is an alien, Jack and Julia (if only her named was Jill) go back to try and tell Victoria about whats going on.
Victoria, angry that Jack is in love with Julia (how she knew that, I don't know) calls the sociopathic boss Sally and tells her (when she asks, of course) that they are no longer an effective team. Like I said above, Sally sends a drone to blow up Victoria. Well, I never liked Victoria anyway. So, Jack and Julia turn to the only people they have left: The scav/humans led by Morgan Freeman! They go and fly to where their base is but get thrown into a radiation zone by accident. They discover, after crash landing (wow, Jack's luck is horrible), that, instead of it being a radiation zone, its a place where another exact copy of him and Victoria (Tech 52) work, helping fix drones, still believing the lie.
After an epic battle with the other Tech, Jack and Julia get in that Tech's ship and go to the scav/human's base.
Morgan Freeman's guys are building a nuke to shoot up and blow the Tet to, well, oblivion! They need Jack's help to launch it and he now gladly gives it to them. However, right before they launch it, drones come in and attack the base, killing tons of people. They destroy the thing that they were planning to use to launch up the bomb. Jack uses his own ship to bring the bomb to the Tet. He blows the Tet sky high (I don't know what you'd call it seeming as their already floating in the sky)  and Julia immediately forgets loving the now blown up Jack and turns to his identical lookalike, Tech 52. His memory has now been restored and they live happily ever after!!!

Parental Guidance Information

As far as violence, this movie is relatively clean. The movie has a lot of shooting in it, several big explosions and multiple intense scenes. However, they is almost no blood or gore to speak of. If you don't like action, suspense, flashing lights, or explosive things, don't watch this. There is also quite a bit of suspense in this movie.
As far as sex, there is some. Tom Cruise appears shirtless several times, Jack and Victoria swim naked as they kiss, they shower naked together and sleep together. There is also quite a bit of suggested sex.
In the area of profanity, the movie is virtually clean (again). There is a little use of shit, Jack tells one character (Sally, at least she deserved it) to "fuck you" and there are other bouts of minor profanity. Some scenes to watch out for in this movie are:
  • Beginning Scene (get on edge when the movie starts until after they shower together)
  • Skinny Dipping Scene (get on edge right after they eat dinner together for the first time)
  • Any scene where he goes down to earth (only if your child is nervous about loud noises and action shots. Probably okay)
  • Last Scene (He uses the words "fuck you." Get on edge when he starts talking to Sally.)
