Movie Ratings In Plain English

All Ages Admitted:

What this means is that the MPAA (Motion Picture Association of America) has deemed this movie appropriate for any ages. This means essentially that there is no language, sexual content, violence or anything else in it. So, feel free to bring your kids to a G rated movie. Anybody can go to a G rated movie without an adult.

Parental Guidance Advised:                                                              MPAA has rated these movies PG, mostly for minor adult references. PG rated movies are mostly (in my experience) slightly violent but not badly so. I personally think the slight references/ scary situations in these movies will go right over kids heads. There is no age restriction on PG movies so kids can go in without an adult.
Parents Strongly Cautioned:
This means that MPAA has found this movie to have lots of violence, sex,or language in it. You must be either at least 13 or accompanied  by a 13 or older person to get in.
Restricted:
R rated movies are not suitable for children. One reason that MPAA would rate a film R is that it says "fuck" at least for times. Of course, you use  of extreme violence (although I don't think many movies are rated R for violence, its mostly language and/or sex), other swears, and/or sex. Also, I've seen many movies where it is rated R for racist/sexist comments repeated over and over again.

Uncommon Ratings:

 Only Over 17 Admitted:
Children cannot watch NC 17 rated movies in theaters even with adult supervision. Most  theaters don't even accept NC 17 rated movies. This rating is used for extreme extreme violence and/or Hollywood movies that are essentially choreographed porn films.

Vulgar, Obscene, or Explicit in the Treatment of Sex:
These movies are extremely sexual. A movie gets rated X only if it is a porn movie. X is not actually an MPAA rating and X movies are not Hollywood. All major cinemas refrain from showing X rated movies. The official age for X rated movies is either 21 and any others a strongly strongly strongly cautioned against watching X rated films even though it is legal as these movies do not get into theaters.
TRIVIA: The X rating used to be used for violence and language as well as  sexual movies

Non Rated Signs:
Not Rated:
This means that MPAA has not rated the movie. If the movie is rated NR it just means that it hasn't been rated. If you feel unsure about whether the movie is kids friendly or not, look it up on Flixified or IMDB or some other website. Even just doing a Google search on it can tell you all you need to know about it. You can even just look at the back of the DVD or look at the story on IMDB or Fandango.

Unrated:
Unrated can mean the exact same thing as Not Rated or it can mean what I'm talking about in this section. An Unrated version of a movie (typically it will say either Unrated or Unedited) means that it is a Directors/Producer's cut version and has content inappropriate for children/minors that the theatrical version of the film did not have.

Self explanatorily, this rating means that the movie either hopes to be or will be rated by MPAA but isn't either finished yet or hasn't been rated yet

Trailers
All Audiences:
This screen appears at the beginning of a trailer that has been rated by the MPAA. It means that the trailers does not contains any scary images and or slight sexual inclinations or minor swears. Sometimes, you will see the film rating between the websites and the rating. This is typically for rated G or PG movies.

Appropriate Audiences:
This means that its a Green Band trailer for an R rated movie, a trailer for a PG 13 movie or a trailer (rarely) for a PG movie. The card means that the trailer contains minor violence/language that is, well, approved for appropriate audiences. Sometimes, the movie's rating is also present.

Mature Audiences Only:
This means that the trailer contains extreme violence and/or language (mostly the word "fuck".) I personally like these trailers better than the Green Band trailers as they typically have less cutting in them (like cutting one scene in half so you don't hear the swear). These trailers are for adults only and Youtube as well as the official movies websites require you to confirm your birthday is over 17 to view it. These trailers are called Red Band or Restricted trailers.
